Summer Pinwheel Craft Tutorial

Pinwheels are so fun to decorate with and are a perfect summer craft!  You would be surprised at how easy they are to make.  You can use them to make a fun garland, or put some on some sticks and add to a vase  - or do what I did today – make cupcake toppers!

I was in charge of bringing a dessert to a family barbecue last week and while I made something super yummy for the adults I wanted to make cupcakes for the kids.  I thought this would be a perfect time to make some pinwheel cupcake toppers – I loved how they turned out!
Supplies Needed:
  • Double sided scrapbook paper
  • Paper cutter
  • Scissors
  • Hole punch
  • Brads
So grab your pretty piece of double sided paper.
Paper
The paper I used is from Lily Bee Design called Handmade Patchwork.
Now we need to cut some squares.  The bigger the square the bigger the pinwheel.  For the cupcake toppers I cut 3x3 squares.  Out of one 12x12 piece of paper I am able to get 16 squares.
squares
Now fold each square in half – open back up and fold in half the other way.

Now using your hole puncher punch one hole in the center.  This is kind of hard to get your hole punch to reach. But since you folded in half each way you can clearly see where the center is, right?  So fold in half again and punch where the center is.

Now grab your scissors.  Cut halfway from the corner to the center.  Do this on all four corners.

Now we need to punch some more holes.  On each corner punch a hole on the left side of the cut as shown in the photo below.

Now let’s get this pinwheel assembled!  Take your first corner and match the hole in the corner  to the hole in the center – hold down with your finger.
1st corner
Repeat with the rest of the corners.  Always match up the hole from the corner to the hole in the center.

Now push the brad through the center and secure.

Now make a bunch more!

At this point you could use them for so many different fun things.  Add to some ribbon and make a garland, scatter around a table for some fun party decor – there are so many things you could do.  For the cupcake toppers I taped some toothpicks to the back.

So fun and easy, right???

The kids loved them as well!

This project was so easy and cost me less than $2!

  1. Oh, Summer! These are just adorable!!! I absolutely love the pinwheels...I've made them before, but never by punching holes and adding a brad...ummm...that's genius! I would always just glue the ends and the have to sit there forever while the glue dried, holding the corners...not fun. I'll definitely be making some!

Thank you so so much for sharing these at our Summer Blog party!
